What do we do for these little creatures? We help birds by feeding them. We make special birdhouses and bathingplaces in our gardens. How different it is for insects! The only attention they get are insect-traps and poison to kill them.
So I started making houses especially for insects. It is striking that insects have a sense of design. The pharaoh ant is at home in a pyramid. A praying mantis can be found in a church and a dung beetle loves the outdoor life around the farm.
It all started with the first insect village in the garden of the Gallery de Stoker. This village was followed by an insect village of 61 houses in the next street, the green oasis of the Van Speijk garden. I am not alone in my concern for the insects. Many visitors think insects deserve a better life. By now The Netherlands has quite a few insect houses and small villages. This movement is spreading over The whole world. There are even insect villages in New-Zealand!
